Unoficially: Turkmenistan denies departure from country to citizens under 40

The age limit for Turkmenistan’s citizens who would like to leave the country has been increased from 30 to 40 years.

In mid-April, there were reports about the authorities’ intention to refuse young Turkmens who have not attained the age of 30 to international flights.

It is noteworthy that the ban has not been officially announced. State-run media also failed to inform the travel restrictions. At the same time, Radio Azatlyk keeps receiving messages about the difficulties which the people of Turkmenistan face when leaving the country.

Any pfficial data on the number of Turkmen citizens traveling outside are not available. But, according to local observers, there is a large-scale labour migration due to the economic crisis unemployment, rising prices and food shortage.

In turn, due to the migration, there are more and more cases of upper-form pupils’ being conscripted into the armed forces before their finishing school, Radio Azatlyk reports with reference to its sources.

Moreover, the Turkmen security services who are set to make migrants return to the country allegedly stepped up pressure on their families.
