UN HR Committee registers complaint by Kastus Zhukouski

The Homiel freelancer has received a confirmation from the UN Human Rights Committee that his complaint was registered on December 12 and sent to the Government of Belarus for comments.

The complaint to the UN HR Committee lists six cases of bringing Zhukouski to responsibility in 2016 for his cooperation with Belsat.

“I want the world to know that freelance journalists are being hounded in Belarus, obstacles for our activity are being created, journalists are accused of illegally producing media content. It seems that the state is using large fines to simply improve its financial situation. I want the attitude of the state to the independent journalistic community to change,” said Kastus Zhukouski.

This year, the police has drawn about two dozen protocols on Kastus Zhukouski for cooperation with the Belsat TV channel — different courts of the Homiel region punished the journalist with fines totaling more than 9,000 BYN.
