“For us it does not matter which side the person is fighting on – it is important that the person violated the Belarusian law. There are those who are fighting on the side of the Ukrainian government, and those who are fighting on the side of the DPR and LPR,” warns Ihar Shunevich Minister.

Prison for one, talk for another

However, criminal proceedings will not be launched against everyone. According to Shunevich, if there are not enough grounds for legal action, the police will only limit itself to additional operational and investigative measures.

“In order to open a criminal investigation, allegations that someone out there was involved, someone saw someone, who was photographed with weapons in their hands, clothed as separatist or National Guard soldier – it does not enough anddoes not mean that it can lead to responsibility,” said Miechyslau Hryb, retired Lieutenant General of police.

Prior to the Minister’s statement, law enforcers started to rather actively seek out the Belarusians who are fighting on the side of Ukraine. Which was not true about those who are involved in military operations in the ranks of the pro-Russian militants. For example, in Homiel, a drunk passenger of minibus openly suggested to blogger Ales Plotka to buy a cartridge tape from the DPR.

“No war – no money. I’ll go if war starts again. Of course I’ll go. Where else to make money?” says separatists who fought for the DPR.

Reaction of the Belarusian volunteers fighting for Ukraine

The soldiers participating in the war on the Ukrainian side cannot yet return home because they fear reprisals.

“We are aware of the danger that awaits us in Belarus, so the question of whether to return to Belarus is no longer topical. But I’m still not going to give up my citizenship,” explains Yan Melnikau, “Belarus” tactical group fighter.

The same day, the task force “Belarus” responded to the statement of the Interior Ministry on the social networks.

“We call on the Belarusian authorities to stop the false propaganda from Moscow, under the influence of which the citizens of Belarus are recruited into the ranks of the illegal armed formations of separatists. All those who are fighting on the side of the separatists, should be brought to justice,” said the statement of the patriots’ Association.

In total, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in Ukraine are fighting about 100 Belarusians. But the exact number of our citizens who are either protecting the independence of Ukraine, or those who are fighting for the ideals of the so-called “Russian world”, is impossible to detect.
