In an attempt to answer the question how the first and still the only president of Belarus managed to retain power for over 20 years the Ukrainian journalists made a documentary.

The film begins with shots of Gerard Depardieu and Alexander Lukashenka’s mowing grass shoulder to shoulder, which is accompanied by a commentary:

“In fact, there is not only one, but two great actors, here, in the Belarusian field.”

The authors is studying the recent breakthrough in relations with the West reached by Lukashenka due to hosting the talks on the situation in Ukraine.

“Batska [Father] caught the moment of his evolving into the ‘next-to-last dictator’ from Europe’s last dictator’. And he skillfully used this moment,” the documentary says.

Among other topics, the Ukrainian journalists touched the issue of Lukashenka’s family and highlighted his younger son Mikalai’s involvement in all top-level events.

“Of course, Lukashenka places stakes on Mikalai. He would be happy to reach that time when it will be possible to pass everything to Mikalai,” Anatol Lyabedzka, the chairman of the United Civic Party, says.

In addition, the guest experts were Vyachaslau Siuchyk, the leader of the movement ‘Together!’; Natallia Radzina, chief editor of news website Charter97.org; film director Yury Khaschavatski and former 2010 presidential candidate and political prisoner Andrey Sannikau.
