Ukrainians erect monument to Belarusian-born hero of Maidan

A monument to Mikhail Zhyzneusky, a hero of the Heaven’s Hundred, has been erected in Hrushevskoho street in Kyiv. The monument bears an inscription “He is a Belarusian man who gave his life for Ukraine’s free future.”

Mikhail’s parents and several Belarusian activists were present at the opening ceremony. Relatives of the people killed during the protests, Euromaidan and Automaidan activists came to pay the tribute to his memory.

Mikhail ‘Loki’ Zhyzneuski left Belarus in 2005 and lived in the town of Bila Tserkva near Kyiv. He was shot dead on the morning of January 22 inHrushevskoho Street. Mr Zhyzneuski was an activist of Ukrainian organisation UNA-UNSO (The Ukrainian National Assembly – Ukrainian People’s Self-Defense). He was buried near the village of Znamya Pracy (Flag of Labour), Homel region.

Zhyzneuski’s father suggested his son had been killed by a sniper but believes that neither Belarusian nor Ukrainian authorities are able to conduct a fair investigation.

On January 26, 2014, on the day Mikhail would have turned 26, priests were reading the last rites to him in St. Michael Golden Domed Cathedral in Kyiv. Over 10,000 persons appeared at the service. When the coffin was being taken away people were chanting: “Hero!” and “Long live Belarus!”
