Ukraine urges EU to impose sanctions on organisers of Russian election in Crimea

EU politicians have received a list of 140 persons involved in the organisation of the Russian presidential election in Crimea.

On March 19, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has handed over to the foreign ministers of the European Union the list of people who participated in the organisation of the illegal presidential election in the occupied Crimea, MFA Spokesperson Mariana Betsa said on Monday.

According to her, the Ukrainian side considers this list as a basis for imposing sanctions against these persons.

“The election results will be null and void, have no legal consequences, and will not be recognised by either Ukraine, or the international community. All persons involved in the organisation and holding of the illegal election in the temporarily occupied Crimea will bear responsibility according to the legislation of Ukraine,” the Foreign Ministry stated in the run-up to Russia’s presidential election which took place on March, 18.

Kyiv decided not to allow Russian citizens, except for diplomats, to the territory of Russian diplomatic institutions in Ukraine to participate in the election.

Ukrainian MP Anton Gerashchenko explained that Kyiv’s decision was dictated by the struggle for Ukraine’s Crimea. According to him, in such a way Ukraine demonstrated its position regarding the non-recognition of the Russian presidential elections in the territory of Crimea which was annexed in 2014.
