Ukraine: Saakashvili suspected of aiding participants in criminal organizations

Mikheil Saakashvili, a former president of Georgia, has been detained as part of criminal proceedings opened under Part 1 of Article 256 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (aiding participants in criminal organizations and covering up their criminal activities).

“The employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) together with the Prosecutor General’s Office have detained ex-president of Georgia, leader of the New Forces Movement party, Mikheil Saakashvili, at the place of his residence in Kyiv,” the SBU press service reports.

The politician may face a prison term of up to 5 years.

On Tuesday morning, law-enforcers came to Saakashvili’s apartment on 7, Kostelna Street. The riot police had to knock the door to search it. Saakashvili got upon the roof and said he would jump if they failed to let him alone. However, he was detained, taken to a minibus and driven away. Hundreds of protesters are trying to discourage law enforcement officers and grab Saakashvili back.

(UPD) The protesters have broken the door of the car and released Saakashvili.
