Ukraine investigating imports of sulfuric acid with Belarus as main supplier

At the request of the “Eastern Mining and Processing Plant” Interdepartmental Commission on International Trade of Ukraine (Dnepropetrovsk region) has decided to conduct a special investigation of imports of sulfuric acid and oleum in Ukraine regardless of the country of origin, news agency “Interfax-Ukraine” reports.

“The case materials contain sufficient evidence showing that in 2014-2016, the imports of sulfuric acid and oleum into Ukraine, regardless of the country of origin, and exports were conducted in the amounts and on the terms that may have caused significant losses of national producers,” the Commission notes.

In particular, compared to 2014, in 2015 and 2016 the imports increased by 87% and 225% respectively, with its proportion in consumption growing by 80% and 200%.

“Analysis of price dynamics shows that in the researched period, import prices were below the prices of the applicant (except in 2016) and the prime cost of production,” adds the Commission.

As a result, in 2015 and 2016, sales of the “Eastern Mining and Processing Plant” in the domestic market decreased by 5% and 8% compared to 2014, production volume decreased by 5% and 6%, employment by 6% and 8%, with the sales in the domestic market being unprofitable.

According to official statistics, the import of sulfuric acid and oleum in Ukraine in January-May 2017 amounted to 20.33 thousand tons worth $ 543.3 thousand, while exports amounted to 0.05 thousand tons at $ 15.5 thousand. The main suppliers are Belarus – 20.13 thousand tons at $ 531.3 thousand.
