Suprematism trams and trolleybuses appear in Vitsebsk

The authors have adapted the old graphic designs to the modern urban transport.

“It was all Malevich, and we simply tried to follow his suit. And a great thing happened — just like a hundred years ago we had a tram, we will now have one in the wonderful Vitsebsk,” say the authors of the project Stsyapan Drazdou and Illya Hurko.

The Vitsebsk tram office boasts almost 120 years of history — until the end of the twenties of the last century it was the only tram system in the territory of today’s Belarus. The office developed next to the school of Suprematism, where Kazimir Malevich and Marc Chagall used to work.

“An art school was created — we were also close by. Our trams were used as a platform for the implementation of creative ideas as a kind of canvas,” said the head of the Vitsebsk tram-trolleybus office Vasil Paulyuchkou.

The authors hope that this is only the beginning of the project on the understanding and implementation of Vitsebsk avant-garde of the twentieth century in the modern urban space. In the near future there will be a competition for the creation of children’s playgrounds in the style of Constructivism and Suprematism.
