Battle for capital: Minsk residents fighting for their city

The new master plan of the Belarusian capital, presented in mid-October, provides for a large-scale development in Minsk leaving its inhabitants outraged. It is the citizens who are to defend the city before officials and the developer. The fight for Minsk was joined by the United Civil Party, which organized the collection of signatures against the development of the capital.

Further development and ill-conceived construction are problems for the whole of Minsk, believe the activists of the United Civil Party, who have launched a petition to extend the discussion of the development plan of the capital and to preserve the historic center of Minsk. The UCP organized a gathering at the entrance to the Kamarousky market.

“They have constructed so many buildings and trying to fit new ones where there are already communications, that people simply do not have green areas for walking any more,” said the outraged residents of Minsk.

UCP leader Anatol Lyabedzka said that Belarusians need to return to management, so that their fates would not end up in the hands of officials.

“We would like to make more and more people active, so that they would go beyond the discussions in their own apartment. That’s the main thing. And, of course, this is a message to the people in power, the city authorities. When hundreds of thousands of people sign a petition, it cannot be ignored, ” said Anatol Lyabedzka.

Another objective of the activists is to test the reaction of the authorities to street activity. The rally was held without arrests, about 200 signatures were collected.
