Opposition activist Tomas Yakavitski found dead in Mahiliou. Suspect detained


Member of the coalition “European Belarus”, Tomas Yakavitski was found dead in Mahiliou. He would have turned 50 in a month.

Tomas’ relatives found the body on the morning of 24 September. According to preliminary data, the death was violent. The murder suspect was arrested.

Tomas Yakavitski was born on October 25, 1966 in Mahiliou. He was one of the pioneers of motor sports in the city.

Tomas lead a quiet life, but he was always ready to help those in need. When the human rights activist Krystsina Shatsikava was diagnosed with oncological disease, Tomas took care of her until her death. He took her for treatments in his own car.

He was one of the organizers of the fireworks to support the inmates of the Mahilou penal colony Andrei Sannikov and Zmitser Bandarenka. He was a protester at the Independence Square on December 19, 2010.

Shortly before his death, Tomas’ company went bankrupt. He was engaged in car repairs. The activist was forced to sell assets to survive.
