Cheapest Belarusian language newspaper closed in Brest

The state media subsidized from the budget incurs losses. Brest regional newspaper “People’s Tribune” is no longer published.

The paper had been published since 1990 in the Belarusian language once a week with a circulation of 3,500 copies. In the 26 years, there came out 1,352 issue of it. Note that the Tribune was the cheapest paper (20 kopecks).

The editorial office has referred to the closing of the newspaper as a new life. The last article, which appeared on the site of “People’s Tribune” said:

The issue that you, dear readers, are holding today, is the last one. But this does not mean a farewell to the newspaper published in Belarusian. As a result of the reorganization of the regional newspaper “Zarya” by joining it with the regional newspaper “People’s Tribune,” the Belarusian language edition will be published in a new format. Twice a month, on Thursdays, “Zarya” will prepare Belarusian themed specials called “Brest Prospects”.

Majority of the employees are already looking for a new job. The ‘Tribune’ employees were probably the lowest paid workers among public media staff.

Television and radio company “Brest” is also facing serious financial difficulties — only news was aired in January, and the majority of the staff were sent on a self-paid leave.
