Tymchuk: Pro-Russian separatists begin massive assault on Donetsk airport

Separatist fighters again tried to capture the Donetsk airport last night, but the attack was repulsed, and seven attackers were killed and more than a dozen were injured, National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) information and analytical centre spokesman Andriy Lysenko said.

“Tonight terrorists made another attempt to attack the Donetsk airport. Ukrainian paratroopers showed heroism and fought off a powerful attack, killing seven militants and injuring more than a dozen,” Lysenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday.

He added that there were no losses among Ukrainian troops. Both airport terminals were under the control of the Ukrainian military, Lysenko said.

Terrorists began a massive assault on the positions of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) forces at the Donetsk airport early Thursday morning, Information Resistance group leader Dmytro Tymchuk said on his Facebook page.

“A new massive assault on the positions of our troops deployed at the Donetsk airport began at 06.00,” Ukrinform quoted him as saying.

According to Tymchuk, last night separatist fighters stormed the Donetsk airport four times – all attacks repulsed, and the enemy sustained substantial losses.

Meanwhile, Russian TV Channel 1 broadcast a news item proving that separatists didn’t even try to conceal the fact that they were sheltering behind civilians when shelling Donetsk airport.

The European Union is ready to impose additional restrictive measures on Russia if pro-Russian separatists in southeastern Ukraine establish control over the Donetsk airport and the city of Mariupol, Bloomberg reported.
