'Time of my life': Lukashenka wants young Belarusians to move to rural areas

President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has promised to take steps to attract more young Belarusians to rural areas.

“I am happy to have had many years of work experience in the village. I cannot say that I am such prominent agrarian, as some people in Belarus and abroad suppose. I am not an agrarian, but I am a countryman, which is much more than an agrarian. Because if talk about the village, we talk about villagers, their relations, their community, people’s attitude to work. It is much broader. Sorry for my lack of modesty, but I am an expert in this field – and not only in sowing, harvesting, storing,” Lukashenka said at Friday’s ceremony of award the best workers of the agricultural industry.

According to the Belarusian leader, he had a variety of experience:

“I had the time of my life when I was working in the village! Believe me, this is the hardes work, the most complex and difficult profession. Because an agrarian, a farmer must know everything. Everything is alive there – soil, plants, animals, people. One should be good at veterinary medicine, agronomy, be a kind of engineer… People involved in agriculture are particularly multi-sided,” he believes.

It is you who have the most beautiful and interesting jobs, Lukashenka told the audience.

“We need to try to walk in farmers’ shoes to understand what we have to do to improve conditions for their work, life and recreation. It is also essential to think how we can attract young people to rural areas. What shall we do to encourage modern, active, well-educated people to stay in small towns and villages, to work and live there,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes him.
