Activists of the “Young Front” had invited everyone to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Pahonya symbol and a white-red-white flag gaining the status of state symbols.

The rally started at 19:00 on Kastrychnitskaya Square.

On 19 September, 1991,25 years ago, the historic symbols were officially recognized as the state symbols. This decision was taken by the Supreme Council of the BSSR of the 12th convocation after the Soviet collapse. Parliamentarians then adopted a resolution to change the name of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic into the Republic of Belarus.

Historical Belarusian symbols were official until the referendum in 1995, when Lukashenka changed them to the Soviet ones, a red and green flag, which came up in Stalin’s time.

As the number of rally participants increased, people came with flags. According to the plan of an opposition activist Zmitser Dashkevich, a chain of people with white-red-white flags would stretch to the Independence Square.

One of the rally organizers, Pavel Vinahradau, was also present at the rally.

Pavel Sevyarynets:

“It is very much about symbols, and I know that the white-red-white flag is the flag of Christ. It is the flag of freedom, truth and justice. This flag touches the soul”.

“The white-red-white flag will be a national symbol when we get power. And we will get it, if we are worthy. At the moment, we are not. Therefore, the most important thing is to change ourselves”.

According to estimates of the organizers, the campaign was attended by about a hundred people.

Zmitser Dashkevich said the rally was a success with people even not having enough flags.

People gathered at the Kastrychnitskaya Square chanting “Long live Belarus”.

“There is now starting the collection of signatures for the recognition of the white-red-white flag as intangible cultural and historical heritage of Belarus. I plan to collect a minimum of one thousand signatures. After a month we will bring them to the Ministry of Culture,” said Zmitser Dashkevich.
