‘Stalin’s police will hit guts out of you’ – theatrical show in Brest

The Belarusian city of Brest has been back in Stalin’s time for a day.

The city authorities turned the anniversary of Nazi Germany attack on the USSR into a show. Officially, the event was called ‘The Fifth International Festival of Military and Historical Re-enacting on June, 22. Brest Fortress’.

Stage show ‘Tomorrow Was the War’ devoted to the last peaceful day before the war in Brest was held in Savetskaya Street, one of the main streets in the city. It was full of men in Soviet-era civilian clothes and in uniform of NKVD, Stalin’s law special police. Many were spending their time in outdoor cafes, people were having fun and drinking alcoholic beverages. The street was jam-packed with military equipment of that time; propaganda posters were seen.

A man in NKVD uniform tried to joke with Brest residents: “Do you hope for the restoration of the Polish government? We’ll hit the guts out of you!”

There were portraits of Stalin, there was music and songs glorifying one of the bloodiest dictators of the 20th century. The event was attended by a number of Russian tourists who had St. George’s ribbons and T-shirts with Putin on them.
