Spy wars heat up: Military expert Alesin suspected of espionage

The Belarusian State Security Committee (KGB) allegedly suspects journalist and military expert Aliaksandr Alesin of espionage, but it is still unknown for which country.

Mr Alesin is specialised in military analytics. He holds a Grand Prix of the award “Golden Pen” among journalists covering automobile topics in business and republican mass media (2008).

Mr Alesin has been detained in Minsk today, an anonymous source told Belsat TV.

According to the unconfirmed information, today’s search of the office building in Fabritsius street in Minsk is linked to Alesin’s arrest.

“I am not giving any comments in this situation yet, but the only thing I can say is that Alesin has not been at work in our editorial office for several days,” Viachaslau Khadasouski, editor-in-chief of newspaper ‘Belorusy I Rynok’ (Belarusians and Market), to which Mr Alesin contributes, said.

Not long ago Aliaksandr Alesin was a guest at Belsat TV program Two vs Two and told about the present-day state of the Belarusian army. He has repeatedly given comments on the subject to belsat.eu.

On Wednesday it became known that a Lithuanian national, who served as a paramedic in the country’s Armed Forces, has been charged with spying for Belarus.

In November, charges were brought against an employee of Lithuanian state company Oro Navigacija (Air Navigation), suspected of having spied for Belarus. Prosecutors also said that a second person was still under investigation. After the arrest Lithuanian political analyst Viktor Denisenko told belsat.eu that a spy war between the West (including the Baltic states) and the East (Russia and its ally Belarus) ‘deteriorated’.

“What ordinary viewers and readers see is just the tip of the iceberg, because these wars are not usually conducted overtly. On the other hand, the fact that more and more information on these secret wars is being revealed proves that the spy passions are rising,” the expert said.
