Separatist Donetsk republic starts issuing own passports

The first passport issued by the self-proclaimed ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’ has been granted to its leader Alexander Zakharchenko.

“Friends, the historic day has come. The Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) has officially began to issue DPR passports to our citizens. This is another serious and important step on the path of nation-building and development of the republic. And today I announce the start of issuing DPR passport,”- Alexander Zakharchenko said at a ceremony.

In coming days, the documents will be granted to other citizens.

“34,000 passports will be given to those who have reached the age of 16. We will also issue them to people who have reached the age of 25 and 45. In the next six weeks one will be able to get such passport in any department of the migration service,” Zakharchenko promised.

It is not necessary to renounce a Ukrainian passport when obtaining that od the DPR, he added.

By the moment, the DPR passport has been recognized solely by South Ossetia. In turn, its independence is recognized by only a few countries in the world.
