Hacker attack on Belarusian Association of Journalists website

On January 18, unknown hackers launched a heavy DoS-attack on the website of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ). The site was down overnight into Thursday.

Multiple requests from unknown IP addresses overloaded the server. The work has been restored on Thursday after some feedback forms was disabled. But the attack is still in progress.

“Over the last year there have not been any DoS-attacks or any other interference in the website’s functioning. Now programmers are studying the data received; we will wait for their judgment,” Barys Haretski, Spokesman for the Belarusian Association of Journalists, says.

According to the BAJ representative, hackers who are currenly carrying out the DoS-attack have Russian IP-addresses.

Information security experts sum up several reasons for DoS-attacking websites, i.e. personal enmity, fun and prank, political struggle, unfair competition, extortion or blackmail.

“Someone might have decided just to have [hacking] practice when attacking our server. In any case, our response will be adequate; law enforcement agencies may be involved in the case. After all, Belarusian law criminalizes such actions,” Haretski stresses.
