Russian State Duma wants to bring back 'God Save the Tsar' anthem

A group of deputies from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia has proposed the State Duma a draft law on replacing the current anthem of the Russian Federation with the “God Save the Tsar” anthem. The relevant document has been published on the website of the State Duma.

“It is the imperial anthem that is a pride for the glorious victory and symbolizes a great country with a great history,” stated the explanatory memorandum to the bill.

“God Save the Tsar” was the official anthem of the Russian Empire from 1833 to 1917.

At present, the Russian anthem is a hymn to the music of Alexandrov. Earlier, the music by Alexandrova was the anthem of the Soviet Union (1944), but in 2000 Sergey Mihalkov wrote new words to it.
