Russian Orthodox Church splits from Constantinople

The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) has decided to completely stop communicating with the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the press service of the ROC reports. Thus, Moscow responded to the decision of the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople.

“On October 15 in Minsk, the Holy Synod passed a statement in connection with the attempted interference of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in the affairs of the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church,” the ROC statement said.

The Belarusian Orthodox Church supported the decision of the ROC.

On October 11, the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople decided to remove the anathema from the leaders of the Kyiv Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church, which was not recognized by the Moscow Patriarchate. Also, the Patriarchate of Constantinople abolished the act of submission of the Kyiv Metropolis of 1686 to Moscow and announced that it could give the Tomos — permission for the autocephaly of a single local Ukrainian Orthodox church.

For the first time in history, the meeting of the Holy Synod, where the possible receipt of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was discussed, took place in Minsk on October 15. After the meeting, the Volokolamsk Metropolitan Hilarion gave a press conference. Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church called the decisions of Constantinople “canonically worthless.”

Eucharistic communion is an opportunity for believers to participate in the Sacrament of another church, it is the canonical unity of churches.
