Russian citizens of Chechen origin held in France over 'planned attack'

Police arrested five Chechens in southern France on suspicion of preparing an attack, AFP reports.

Four of them were arrested in Montpellier and a fifth in Beziers. According to Midi Libre newspaper, a cache of explosives was also found, and investigations were continuing.

The five suspects, Russian nationals from Chechnya, were placed in custody and their homes have been searched, the local.fr quotes  prosecutor Yvon Calvet as saying. The prosecutor said certain “products” had been recovered during their searches, without giving further details.

On Monday several hundred thousand people joined a state-organised rally in the Chechen capital Grozny against cartoons of prophet Mohammad published by Charlie Hebdo.

“Islam is a religion of light. It teaches us to live in concord with all the nations of our country, with representatives of other religions. We do practise what the holy Koran preaches,” Ramzan Kadyrov, head of the Chechen Republic, said in his address to compatriots.

It is to be recalled that this peace lover has recently said in an interview to Russian TV channel NTV that he is ready to quit his position and fight against ‘shaitans’ in Donbas. So called ‘Kadyrovites’ (Kadyrov’s guard) take part in the undeclared Russo-Ukrainian war on the side of pro-Russian militants.

“We say firmly that we will never allow anyone to go unpunished for insulting the name of the prophet and our religion,” Kadyrov said.

Pavel Gubarev, one of the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk people’s republic, has recently been abducted by Kadyrovites as he reportedly claimed Ramzan Kadyrov had had his hand in Charlie Hebdo massacre. Later Gubarev stated the article was a paper hoax and he had never had any information on the subject.

Chechnya, a republic in the Caucasus region to the south of Russia, has been labelled as a breeding ground for terrorism. The two men accused of carrying out the bomb attack on the Boston marathon were of Chechen origin.

Terrorist Islamic State has recently published a video showing the execution of two men who said they were Russian intelligence agents. In the end the boy on the photo below shot them in the head; the video also featured an Islamic State terrorist of the Chechen origin.
