Riot police break Belarus’ activist jaw. Perpetrator not found

In August 2015, Belarus Interior Ministry’s Special Rapid Deployment Force officers brutally detained activist Vyachaslau Kasinerau and broke his jaw.

The man attempted to get the officers held accountable. The criminal case over into his beating was opened as far as late November 2015. Since that time, a preliminary investigation has repeatedly been suspended. According to the investigators, they fail to identify perpetrators.

“The case over the crime under article 149-1 of the Criminal Code shall be suspended due to the failure to identify a person which is to be held accountable,” the Investigation Committee says.

At the same time, it is reported that ‘sweep operations continue to be carried out’.

In May and August 2015, three men – Vyachaslau Kasinerau, Vadzim Zharomski, Maxim Pyakarski – drew graffitis in Minsk – one with the words “Belarus must be Belarusian”, ornament and crossed signs of the sickle with a hammer and swastika, and the other with the inscription “The revolution of consciousness is already in progress …”, featuring a silhouette of a man throwing a Molotov cocktail. They also stained with paint a social banner with an image of police officers on Haretski Street in Minsk.

In January 2016, the sentence was declared to authors of graffiti ‘Belarus is to be Belarusian’ in Frunzensky district court of Minsk. The trio was found guilty of damaging property under Article 341 of the Belarusian Criminal Code. Vadzim Zharomski was punished by a fine of 50 basic units, Maxim Pyakarski – 40 basic units, Vyachaslau Kasinerau – 30 basic units.
