Response to student protests may be ‘more aggressive’ – Education Minister

Minister Mikhail Zhuraukou has met with members of the National Youth Council of the Ministry of Education.

The top official commented on the recent action of the movement ‘Students are against!’. Its members blast the idea of introducing fees for reapiting exams at the Belarusian State University.

“Perhaps, we should be more aggressive. This movement is a closed book, it is supposedly called ‘Students are against!’, but there are no students among his members! We need to think over how to respond to it and what to do,” the Minister said.

According to him, democracy in social networks should not be associated with a ‘complete anarchy’. Zhuraukou also proposed to educate the public on web.

“You see now that there is a total disorder on the internet, in social media. It is to be put to rights. Such mess and permissiveness that now exist shall not be. We must keep an eye on what is posted there!”

In response, Pro-government Youth Council expressed its readiness to explain to students which information can be published: Chairwoman MP Inessa Klyashchuk said special seminars would be held on the subject.

On December 2, a group of students of the Belarusian State University (BSU) held the action ‘Love and Solidarity’ in Minsk.

They were protesting against the Rector’s decision to introduce fees for repeating exams and tests. Rector Syarhei Ablameyka failed to come and talk with the protesters who even laid a red carpet to welcome him.
