Mechyslau Hryb, a police lieutenant general and former chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus, tries to find answers to the question in Belsat TV program ‘Talk of the Day’.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been several high-profile scandals for the Belarusian police. In January, tut.by journalist Pavel Dabravolski who was covering the ‘graffiti case’ was beaten by plain-clothed police officers in the building of a court in Minsk . In Brest region, a road police officer insulted a driver saying ‘F*ck you’ but remained unpunished.

What is to be done to stop the police’s outrage against the nation? Is there a lack of appropriate laws in Belarus? According to Mechyslau Hryb, the Belarusian legislation is sufficiently developed, as well as the code of police officers’ conduct in the course of detaining criminals or violators.,

In his opinion, police officers’ outrageous behavior is often driven by their low level of education.

“Nowadays residents of cities, of Minsk are not very eager to work for the police. But police jobs are very popular with peasants by origin. And they are not always well-educated lawyers. They have some kind of training, but as a rule, it has nothing in common police studies.”

In February, Belarusian president Alyaksandr Lukashenka reiterated that the country’s law enforcement agencies should do their best to improve their public image and strive for being liked by citizens.
