Russia to monitor Belarusian meat and milk from border to store

Rosselkhoznadzor will fully control the movement of Belarusian livestock products through the territory of Russia starting from border crossing. According to the agency, it was Minsk that asked to introduce such measures.

“Rosselkhoznadzor expresses deep concern associated with an increase in attempts to import animal products of unknown origin from the territory of Belarus into Russia, as well as the cases of non-compliance of Belarusian products to the requirements of legislation on quality and safety… To this end, at the request of the Belarusian side, the Rosselkhoznadzor will introduce supervision over the production from the administrative border line to the place of sale,” said the statement.

This measure will prevent the Belarusian side’s claims, as products will be monitored in the “Argus” and “Mercury” information systems.

How can the food conflict affect Belarusians?

If Russia strictly limits the import of beef from Belarus, as it did earlier with pork, it may become cheaper in the Belarusian stores. But to compensate for the loss of income, the state will be forced to impose new taxes on the population or to go for budget cuts.
