Rapid Trident: 2016 drills kick off in Ukraine

Over 1,800 soldiers from 14 NATO member states and their partners are to participate in joint military drills at the International Peacekeeping and Security Center (IPSC) in Yavoriv in western Ukraine from June 27 till July 8.

The exercises are part of the Rapid Trident programme, which brings together NATO members and its allies in eastern Europe.

The drills are seen as a sign of the commitment of NATO states to support non-NATO member Ukraine, as it continues to fight combined Russian-separatist forces in the east of the country.

Rapid Trident is an annual field training exercise which involves armored vehicles maneuvering, shooting practice with small arms and coordinating operations with military helicopters.
