Rape or tax evasion? Belarus state-run TV smears activist who left abroad

For over 20 years Belarusian state-run media have been harping on about ignorance and immorality of Lukashenka’s critics and opponents. As it follows from their reports and documents, everyone who do not like something in the country and, in particular, in Lukashenka’s style of ruling, is a priori not ok. Law enforcers and judges are also open to such opinion.

At the moment, Lukashenka-controlled media workers are breaking new ground. In their recent news story ‘Evil For Export’, TV station Belarus 1 told viewers about Belarusian political activists, who left abroad and, according to them, violated European laws.

Belarusian citizen Alyaksei D., whose name was mentioned, has been living in Warsaw for several years. He is waiting for political asylum decision. Not long ago, Polish policemen detained him at the request of the Belarusian side. But the judge released Alyaksei on bail until the moment Belarus furnished proofs of his crimes.

“When the judge saw our submissions, he rejected the prosecutor’s request and let me wait for papers from Minsk at liberty,” the man says.

At first, the Belarusian side charged the activist with rape, but later the accusation turned out to be ‘irrelevant’.

Then Minsk sent information that I had not pay taxes, i.e. changed their accusation. The [Polish] police joked that Interpol had turned into a kindergarten,” the activist stressed.

According to the asylum-seeker, the regime is seeking ways for getting money.

“[Belarusian] economy and people are experiencing [financial] problems. They need help, e.g. some credits from Europe. But Europe is taking the observance of human rights in account; that is why the regime wants to defame opposition and prove all of them are rapists and murderers. They also want Europe to forget that once opposition politicians and businessmen disappeared in Belarus,” he believes.
