Putin’s dissertation written by his advisor - media

Vladimir Litvinenko, Rector of the Mining University in St. Petersburg, threw himself into the breach and completed a thesis for Vladimir Putin, to whom he was the advisor.

According to his daughter Olga, in 1994, after Putin helped Litvinenko to get the post of Rector, an ‘organized criminal group of professors and teachers’ appeared at the university. The group ‘hammered out bogus theses’, and their sham authors presented them without any difficulty.

First post-graduate scientific degree cost about or above €30,000, higher doctoral degree dissertations had €50,000 – 100,000 price tags. At the same time, the woman believes that her father wrote a thesis for the future president of Russia for free, because ‘they had a joint business, and not one’.

“In the summer of 1997, a photocopier was taken to our dacha, my father took a leave. Putin never appeared there, he never had any consultations with my father… The dissertation was written by my father alone. And the process was the following: he took various books, found some good extracts, photocopied proper pages, then cut them out, glued those pieces on a A4 sheet, added some comments and then it was turn of other items. I saw it with my own eyes,” Olga Litvinenko told the Russian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

In 2006, researchers at the Brookings Institution in Washington detected plagiarism in Vladimir Putin’s thesis ‘Strategic Planning of Region’s Mineral Resource Base Renewal Amid Market Relations Formation’. 16 of 20 pages, with which the key part of Putin’s work beging were either copied or rewritten with minimal changes from the textbook Strategic Planning and Policy by William King and David Cleland, Professors at University of Pittsburgh.
