First 'parasite' on trial in Homiel

A Homiel resident Alyaksandr Syamionau has filed a lawsuit against the tax office, which had sent him notification on the payment of the ‘parasite’ tax.

The 53-year-old had worked for 28 years, he lived in Russia, where he was engaged in business activities until 2015. Then he had to return home. Since he could not find a job, he lived on his savings.

Alyaksandr Syamionau thinks he owe nothing to the states. In his lawsuit, he demands that decree be recognized unconstitutional, and that the authorities acknowledge his involvement in the financing of government spending.

Alyaksandr Syamionau is assisted by human rights activist Leanid Sudalenka.

There is less than a week until the expiration of the tax payment deadline, which is on February 20. Among the nearly half a million citizens who received the notifications from the tax office, the fee was paid by less than 50 thousand people. Human rights defenders across the country are helping Belarusians to defend their rights against government officials and not to pay the unconstitutional fee.
