Pacification of Russia: EU refrains from new sanctions while ceasefire in force - source

The decision on the EU’s new sanctions on Russian which was made last week will not be published and, consequently, will not be put into effect until a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine continues, a European Commission representative told Ukrainskaya Pravda.

“The future of the sanctions significantly depends on President Poroshenko. If he deems making peace and cessation of hostilities in the east of Ukraine possible, the EU will also take the track of soothing sanctions and refrain from bringing them into force,” the official explained.

According to him, both EU and Kyiv believe that ceasefire violations have been unconspicuous.

“A way to truce is thorny, that is why we are not going to react on individual cases [of violation]. It is the fact that the Ukrainian authorities will recognise the truce means much to us,” the source said.

The new sanctions over Ukraine would prohibit U.S. and European cooperation in searching Russia’s Arctic, deep seas or shale formations for crude, according to three U.S. officials who spoke with Bloomberg on condition of anonymity because the measures haven’t been made public. If implemented, they would affect companies from Dallas to London, including Exxon Mobile Copp. (XOM) and BP Plc. (BP/)
