Over 500K Belarusians living below poverty line


Belarusians are becoming increasingly poor, National Statistical Committee reports.

According to a sample survey of households living standards in the first quarter of 2016, the number of people with income below the subsistence minimum was 5.4% (511, 000 persons). For comparison: in the first quarter of 2015, the level of poverty of the population was equal to 4.9%.

In the regions, the lowest poverty level was detected in Minsk (1.1%), the highest – in the Brest region (7.9%). In Hrodna the figure in the first quarter was 4.1%, in Minsk – 4.8%, in Vitsebsk – 6.2%, in the Mahiliou oblast – 7.5%, in Homiel – 7.6%.

In the first quarter of 2016, the average estimated subsistence minimum in the per capita amounted to 1.6 million rubles a month.
