One of the largest in Eastern Europe: Great Mosque built in Minsk


The building of a Muslim place of worship is over in Minsk, the city authorities report.

“In the capital, the construction of the Great Mosque has been completed in Griboyedov Street; the surrounding area has been put in order. At the moment, the building is on the stage of acception.”

It should be noted that it was actually built as early as January 2016, Minsk authorities say.

In April 2016, Belarusian president Alyaksandr Lukashenka announced the opening of a mosque in Minsk at the XIII Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul.

“In the capital of our state we are finalizing the construction of the mosque which will be opened in the nearest future,” he said.

The official opening is scheduled for July 9, 2016.

Erecting the mosque began in 2004. Then the process was frozen for several due to financial problems. In 2013, construction works were resumed. The Great Mosque of Minsk which is expected to hold over 1,500 believers at the same time will be one of the largest mosques in Eastern Europe.
