Number of potential refugees in Belarus up 6 times

The largest group of forced migrants is from Ukraine. Since the beginning of armed conflict in Donbass, 1,600 Ukrainian citizens have appealed to the Belarusian authorities for refugee status or subsidiary protection. About 1,400 of them have received a temporary residence permit in Belarus for a period of one year.

Today, every 113th person on the planet is either a refugee or internally displaced person. The total number of refugees in the world has reached a record level.

“Unfortunately, over the year the number has grown by 10%. Today, there are 65 million of such people. Two-thirds of them are internally displaced persons, they were the most difficult to reach. One-third is the refugees. 90% live in low-income or poor countries. 50% of refugees are children,” said the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

Majority of people is fleeing from Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia.

The current UN report was timed to coincide with World Refugee Day, which is celebrated on 20 June.
