No passport, no prison: Volha Nikalaichyk still in limbo over 'beauty bag' case

Judge of the Minsk City Court ruled for the footage from CCTV cameras of the Russian Embassy in Minsk to be viewed.

Judge Valer Kamisarau, in charge of the appellation case of Volha Nikalaichyk, agreed to the demands of the activists to make public the footage and find out whether Volha Nikalaichyk and Katsyaryna Sadouskaya misbehaved in fron of the diplomatic building around April 29.

On May 26, the women were accused of foul language and resisting police, for which they were sentenced to 13 days of administrative arrest (Volha Nikalaichyk) and a fine of almost 11 million rubles (Katsyaryna Sadouskaya) for the political performance. The activists tried to pass to the Embassy a “beauty bag” for the pro Putin bikers of the club Night Wolves.

The court dismissed the petition of the activists’ lawyer and did not want to use the video as evidence.

“On the security camera, it must be clearly seen that we did not fight, did not resist, did not lie on the ground. Katsyaryna Sadouskaya is 70 years old, she has diabetes. She cannot even bend her legs, not to mention rolling on the ground. This trial was a disgrace,” said Volha Nikalaichyk to Belsat.eu.

The director calls the judge’s decision a good sign. She is currently not in prison: after the verdict was passed, the public activist was not detained, but police still did not return her passport, which was taken after the performance.

It is also unknown when the next meeting will be – the review of the application has been postponed indefinitely.
