New Belarusian passports will feature famous buildings

The new passport and ID-card designs will be approved at the top level.

On January 1, 2019 Belarusians will receive biometric passports, as well as a new document — an ID-card, which will be the main document to confirm the identity of the citizen on the territory of Belarus. The passport will only be needed to travel abroad.

Chairman of the Department of Citizenship and Migration Alyaksei Byahun said that samples of new passports and ID-card are now at the approval stage.

“We have almost completed the preparatory stage of the introduction of biometric technologies in the national documents,” Byahun said.

Goznak has recently prepared samples of the new biometric passports. According to Alyaksei Byahun, they take into account national peculiarities: each page of the passport has iconic images of Belarusian architecture.

Designs of the passport and ID-card, however, will be approved “at the top level.”

After that, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Goznak will hold a tender to select a printing house, which will manufacture the new documents.

Biometric passport will cost about 30 euros. It will be possible to travel abroad with the old passport until its expiry date.
