Dozens of Belarusians took part in Thursday’s festive march in Minsk. The event was held on occassion of the 25th anniversary of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic’s acquiring the status of the constitutional law.

At the end of the action, unknown provocateurs started to throw eggs at the procession and then disappeared.

Several participants and two police officers ran after them, Nasha Niva reports. A police officer borrowed a bicycle and rode in their direction.

The provocateurs must have joined the action near the Palace of Trade Unions. They looked a bit suspicious because all of them were wearing hoodied on that warm August evening.

According to an observer of the Belarusian human rights centre Viasna, the wrongdoers jumped into a blue minivan which stood next to the university building.

Asked why they failed to detain the attackers, the police said that they ‘relaxed’ as the event was almost over.

According to witnesses, Mr Balaba, Commander of the Minsk riot police, became furious after the incident had happened. When one of the protesters asked him whether he was going to catch the provocateurs, Balaba answered in Belarusian: “Don’t you see???”
