Foreign Ministry summons Russian counsellor over statements denying Belarus’s sovereignty

Vadim Gusev, Minister-Counsellor of the Russian Embassy, has been summoned to to Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs over a top-echelon political analyst’s denial of the sovereignty and independence of Belarus.

As reported earlier, Leonid Reshetnikov, Head of the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies (RISI), stated that our country which is ‘historically part of Russia’ was ‘following the Ukrainian scenario’ and urged the Russian leadership ‘not to forget’ about Belarus.

A protest was lodged to the representative of the Russian federation.

Such statements are unfounded and unacceptable, the ministry stresses. According to Belarusian diplomats, Reshetnikov’s statement fails to correspond to the strategic nature of the Belarusian-Russian relations and principles on which the mutual cooperation are based, i.e. respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.

The video of Mr Reshetnikov’s speech appeared on the Internet on December, 20. The Belarusian language created by the Communists party is only 90 years old, Reshetnikov, a pro-Putin political expert and former intelligence officer, believes.
