Belsat TV should continue its work - Poland's Senate Speaker

In an interview with the newspaper Rzeczpospolita, Stanisław Karczewski, Speaker of the upper house of the Polish parliament, commented on the issue of Belsat TV and said the Senate would make amendments to the decision regarding the channel.

“The Senate will make amendments. However, opinions vary. Belsat TV should operate further. I respect the achievements of director Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy and Belsat TV team, because they do a good job. The TV station should be financed in such a way as to be able to work freely and independently. In the Senate, we will resume financing Belsat so that it could work in normal conditions in 2017,” the top official said.

On December 18, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Wazczykowski voiced the ministry’s plans of Belsat TV transition to a web mode and its journalists’ transfer to TVP Polonia.

Ambiguous information on the closure of the channel caused a massive public outcry and garnered media coverage in Belarus and Poland. Belsat TV Director granted a number of interviews to Polish media outlets, in which she explained why the liquidation of the TV station would be inappropriate and unwise.
