Abkhazia: Man blows himself up on premises of TV station

A man blew himself up on the premises of the Abkhazian State Television and Radio Company TV in Sukhumi, Abkhazia’s Interior Minister Aslan Kobakhia said.

“He was seen that he was having a bomb. Perhaps, he was not alone. Field work is in progress; all the security structures of Abkhazia are involved,” the minister stressed.

The man set off an explosive device in the equivalent of 200 gr trinitrotoluene (TNT),which killed him. (A video of the blast, 18+)

According to Abkhazian authorities, the suicide bomber’s action was an attempt to commit a terrorist attack.

Abkhazia, formally the Republic of Abkhazia or Apsny, is recognised only by Russia and a small number of other countries. Although the Georgian government lacks control over Abkhazia, the United Nations and the majority of the world’s governments consider Abkhazia part of Georgia.
