‘Morally decayed country’: Russians show hostile attitude towards USA - poll


The majority of Russian citizens (59%) interviewed by the Russian Center of Public Opinion Research (WCIOM) has extremely negative attitude towards the U.S. government, its survey conducted on July 25-26 says. Only 3% of respondents were friendly to the United States.

The level of hostility to the United States has sharply risen in Russia in comparison to that of the 90s, sociologists say. At the time, 2% of Russians said they were not in favour of the USA.

Now, 15% of respondents believe that the USA is a ‘morally decayed’ country where crime rates are extremely high. The same number of interviewees state that there is no ‘human warmth’ and cordiality in relations between Americans. According to 9%, racial discrimination does exist in the country.

12% of Russians agree that the USA has high standards of living, while 11% draw attention to the strong gap between the rich and the poor. A number of respondents (7%) recognize the U.S. successes in the development of science and technology, 5% believe that the U.S. society is free.

The survey involved 1,600 people in 130 settlements of 46 regions of Russia. The statistical error does not exceed 3.5 per cent.
