Monument to Leu Sapieha to appear in Slonim


On February 5, the Slonim Culture Center hosted an evening to celebrate the opening of the year of culture in Belarus.

The evening brought together the best artistic groups of the Slonim region. The festival was opened by the head of the Slonim district executive committee Aleh Tarhonsky. During his celebratory speech, the head of the district said that this year, thanks to the efforts of the inhabitants of Slonim and local authorities there will appear a monument to the former warden of Slonim, Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Leu Sapieha (1557-1633).[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”104301″ img_size=”large”][vc_column_text]At the times of Leu Sapieha, Slonim became a cultural, industrial and political center. Next to the castle on the bank of the Shchara river, Chancellor Sapieha placed a stone palace, which hosted the general meetings of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania starting from January 1597. The Slonim castle housed a library, archives, works of art. Leu Sapieha streamlined Slonim streets, bridges, roads.
