MoD rep calls Belarusians signing against staging parades Nazis’ ideological descendants

Uladzimir Makarau, the official representative of the Defense Ministry, has insulted Belarusians who oppose staging military parades in downtown Minsk, the authors of the petition believe.

On Monday Colonel Makarau called them ‘ideological descendants’ of Nazi politician Wilhelm von Kube. During the Second World War Kube became a senior official in the occupying government, achieving the rank of Generalkommissar for Weissruthenien (Belarus).

A bit later, some Internets users called on Belarusians to sign a joint appeal for the protection of honor and dignity and demand a public apology from Colonel Makarau.

“His statement insults those who come out against holding military parades in the city only because of safety considerations and cost reasons,” the appeal reads.

The dispute over the appropriateness of staging military parades in the center of Minsk has been in progress for years. A few days ago, blogger Anton Matolka created a petition against pompous military shows in the city. it has already been signed by over 5500 people. The petition appeared after a tank which was to take part in the dress rehearsal demolished a lamppost in Independence Avenue:

The official Independence day is celebrated on July 3, on the day of liberation of the Belarusian capital from German invaders. Such decision was taken by the republican referendum held in1996. Earlier the Independence day had been commemorated on July 27, its celebration being coincided with the day of passing the Declaration of Sovereignty of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1990.
