Minsk police confirm arrest of Belarusian fighter for Ukraine


The spokesman for the city police has confirmed that a Belarusian citizen who fought in the east of Ukraine was arrested in Minsk.

A citizen of Belarus who was detained on November 26 at the railway station in Minsk, had an armoured vest on him, spokesman for the Minsk police Alyaksandr Lastouski told channel STV.

The Investigative Committee also published pictures of belongings and documents which were allegedly revealed in the course of searching. The photos show two Belarusian passports, several bank cards, a gun and a certificate of participation in the anti-terrorist operation in Ukraine, an armoured jackets and a military card.

“He had a travel bag, he was dressed in a quite unusual manner, his behavior gave him away. The policemen decided to check his identity, came up to the man, introduced themselves and asked to see some ID. At that moment, they noticed that the man was wearing a bulletproof vest made of steel,” Lastouski said.

According to the official, the arrestee also had explosives, a red and black flag of the Ukrainian right-wing organization Right Sector.

A criminal case was initiated against the man for illegal possession of weapons (Article 295 of the Belarusian Criminal Code).

Earlier, Belarus’ Interior Minister Ihar Shunevich promised that the security agency would deal with Belarusians fighting in Ukraine and added that they had files for two dozen ‘mercenaries’.

It does not matter which side of the conflict – Ukraine or unrecognised republic – they are fighting for, the Minister stressed.
