Ministry finds money: Belarusian athlete Hurkou to participate in Muaythai World Championship

Vital Hurkou, a world famous sportsman and one of the vocalists of the Brutto band, is getting ready for IMFA Muaythai World Championship that will take place in Sweden’s Jonkoping on May 19-28, 2016.

“The climate is excellent here, everyone is doing their job, nobody recalls any conflicts of the past. Our task is to become a close-knit team and win,” Hurkou told the newspaper Nasha Niva and added that the Ministry found the money for his participation in the championship as soon as the news had gone viral on web.

Hurkou stresses that he is very grateful to the Ministry of Sports for allocating funds.

On April 13, it became known that Hurkou who in March once again became the champion of Belarus in Thai Boxing, was no longer employed by the Ministry of Sport and did not get a salary. At stake was his participation in the World Championship in Sweden. Prior to this, management of the Muay Thai and kickboxing federation criticized Hurkou’s photo shoot with Pahonya emblem (which is commonly believed to be a symbol of Belarusians opposition) and his patriotic Facebook posts dedicated to the history of Belarus. The presidium of the Federation included people who tracked his movements, monitored Internet and collected information that would compromise the athlete.

In reaction to the news, Talaka.by platform announced a fundraising campaign for Vital’s participatation in the World Cup. It was planned to collect Br 68 million 200 thousand (approximately € 3,000). All the money was collected in a single day. Now the sportsman is going to give them for charitable causes.
