On January 21-22, Minsk hosted the 2nd Open Winter Swimming Championship.

In the run-up of the competition the ice of Komsomolskoye Lake was cut and a swimming pool (25 meters x 18 meters) was equipped. In some places the ice was 26 centimeters in thickness. The temperature of water was about +2.

Unlike last year’s championship, when mainly Russians joined Belarusians, this year, athletes from another six countries – Austria, Belgium, Latvia, Poland, France and Estonia- took part in the competition.

To ensure safety at the tournament, two ambulances and doctors of the Minsk City Society for Development of Water Transport and Passenger Safety were on duty. There were special baths, warm water bowls, tents, dressing rooms and heat guns.

The championship was organized by the Sports and Tourism Ministry, Minsk City Executive Committee and the Belarusian Federation of Health Training and Winter Swimming.
