March 21-22: Ukrainian pilot Savchenko may die shy of delivering verdict

The Ukrainian aviatrix continues ‘dry’ hunger-striking: she is refusing food and drink.

After the judge announced that the verdict would be delivered on March 21-22, Nadiya Savchenko started singing the anthem of Ukraine and some of the people present caught it up.

“The court has stolen a part of life from me, and I demand the verdict be delivered within a week. In this case, I will have a chance at life. You may read the  sentence now, tomorrow or   mot later than in a week. If you opt to announce that the verdict will be in two weeks or six months … If you want to demonstrate how strong you are – do it. But remember that we are playing  for my life. The stakes are high,” Savchenko said.

After her last plea, the pilot raised her middle finger towards the judges.

Ukrainian MPs who were set to attend the hearing were kept in Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow. The deputies were released only after their  flight to Rostov-on-Don departed. As the result, the Ukrainians took off later than it was planned.

On March 3, Nadiya Savchenko was to have delivered her last plea in Donetsk City Court, Russia’s Rostov region, but the judge adjourned the hearing until March 9. In her turn, Savchenko went on a hunger strike.

As reported before, Prosecutor’s Office asked for 23 years in prison and a 100,000-ruble fine (about $1,400) for Savchenko on Wednesday.

The trial of Savchenko started In September, 2015. The Ukrainian pilot is accused of murdering Russian journalists and illegal border crossing. In her turn, the woman denies any wrongdoing. According to Savchenko, she was abducted by force and transported to Russia. Savchenko’s lawyers state that at the moment shelling the defendant was in captivity in Russia and, consequently, she was not able to regulate fire.
