Poland’s ruling party will support democracy in Belarus – Law and Justice’s representative

Mariusz Błaszczak, the chairman of the parliamentary club of the Polish party ‘Law and Justice’ tells Belsat TV about the new ruling party’s plans regarding cooperation with Belarus.

“Undoubtedly, we will be supporting the trends that move Belarus closer to laying the foundation of democracy. Belarus is our neighbor; and we hold our interest in having as good relations with our neighbors as possible,” the politician said.

On Sunday, the parliamentary elections took place in Poland. According to the preliminary calculations, the conservative party ‘Law and Justice’ (Prawo i Sprawedliwość) gained a majority of votes (37.7%). The leader of the party is Jarosław Kaczyński, the brother of Polish president Lech Kaczyński who died in a plane crash near Smolensk in 2010.

The party is likely to actively cooperate with the Belarusian opposition. For example, in 2010, Law and Justice signed a cooperation agreement with the leaders of the Belarusian Popular Front and took a stand in favor of political prisoners and dissidents in Belarus.
