Majority of books published by Skaryna remain in Russia

According to the director of the National Library of Belarus Raman Matulski, libraries, museums and private collections all around the world possess 520 original copies of books published by Francysk Skaryna.

Most of the books are in Russian. There are 28 original publications of Skaryna in Minsk, 10 of which are stored at the National Library, and 18 – in the “Belgazprombank” collection. Forty-seven books are in Ukraine. There is also a large collection of books in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

The best-preserved books published by the first Belarusian printer are in Germany. Raman Matulski explained this by the fact that in this Protestant country Skaryna’s books were not in great demand.
