Lukashenka: We are cornered

During his working trip to the Homiel region, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said that the government had no other option but to provide Belarusians with the average salary of 500 USD. He said that the people would no longer tolerate the low standard of living.

Speaking about the attitude of the population to the authorities, Lukashenka said:

“Next year, people will not stand for this kind of situation in the country, and they will be right. Thus, this year is decisive. Frankly speaking, we’re simply cornered. There will be nothing to explain it with. The planned salary of one thousand rubles is the only choice we have. when we help people earn this, let them make noise, go out and shout. Then they should have to move. But we have to help them earn at least this amount of money.”

This quote by Lukashenka was made in a story shown by the ONT. At the same time, the presidential press service and the BelTA state news agency did not have that quote.

Numerous protests against the decree #3 took place in Minsk and regions in February-March 2017. People expressed dissatisfaction with the low standard of living and demanded the resignation of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Hundreds of people across the country were detained and subjected to administrative harassment.
